Maya – 4 months old

March 3, 2011

Well as I was so late with the 3 month update (busy with visitors, ceremonies and getting the new house finished) I decided just to combine it with the 4 month update. Maya has changed SO much in the last couple of months, it’s really hard to believe that she was just a tiny newborn a few months ago.

The last month has been all about grabbing and chewing on everything in sight. Since about 3 months old, everything within arms reach has been grabbed and shoved in her mouth. She even tried to grab a handful of rice off my plate the other night! She’s also discovered her feet in the last few days and loves playing with them and putting them in her mouth. I’m not planning on attempting any weaning until 6 months but she sat quite happily in a high chair when we were out for lunch the other day and I’ll be looking forward to trying out some baby led weaning with finger foods in a couople of months.

She can now sit up on her own for a few seconds before toppling over but she much prefers standing! She can stand up for quite a while with somebody holding her hands for balance. She’ll quite often refuse to bend her legs and sit down again as she’s so happy standing up. She loves her door bouncer and I relented and let made buy her a walker yesterday after seeing how much fun she had in the one at komangs house (i’d read so much about them being dangerous and actually slowing down development that i had banned made from getting one).

Her favourite games involve being thrown around as much as possible. She loves being thrown in the air and playing ‘horsey’ (basically sitting on mades chest while he’s lying down as he jiggles up and down at high speed. She goes into fits of giggles if we tickle her or pretend to eat her and thinks the dog is really funny too.

No new sounds yet and agoo has been replaced by shouting and making high pitched squealing noises. She gets particularly excited if there are lots of people around and loves looking at all the other babies when we go to the doctor. She’s way more sociable than me!

She’s always been good at rolling, rolling onto her side from just a few weeks old and she’s been rolling all the way over for ages but getting stuck on her arm when she rolls from back to front. The last couple of weeks she’s figured out that if she lifts her head up when she’s on her side, she can pull her arm out from under herself so now when i put her on her back she nearly always flips straight onto her front and sits on her elbows. She’s nowhere near crawling yet and getting frustrated that she can’t move but she can cover a fair distance by rolling and shuffling. A few days ago I left her on the bed, surrounded by pillows and came back to find her at the other end of the bed lying on her front, bashing the keys on my laptop. She mostly sleeps on her front now as she rolls over in her sleep (and often wakes herself up in the process, grr)

She had her ears pierced at 2 and a half months, much to my distress (All girls here have them done as babies) and her 3 month ceremony which I’ll be posting about separately. She still loves bathtime more than anything and is loving the big bath at the new house. We took her for a paddle in the sea but she wasn’t too impressed with the big crashing waves at padang bai. She’s only tolerating being in the baby carrier facing me for a short time now but she loves it facing out! problem is it’s bad for her back so we can’t do it for long. Think I’ll try out one of the back carrying positions soon.

She’s now 7.4kg which is just about average for her age but a whopping 69cm tall – the same height as an average 9 month old!
